Generation of R&D&i projects at national and international level. Synergies and consortia creation with complementary companies and knowledge centers to improve the business of the companies. Attending the specialized knowledge in the field of packaging, that range from suppliers of raw materials to the final brands, integral management of the entire project is done, with the aim of passing on improving competitiveness and value to the participating entities.
The Packaging Cluster is at the same time an instrument for disseminating and communicating projects with guarantees, to make them reach the client sectors through their own dissemination channels, as well as access to the general and specialized press, with the aim of making scalable the obtained solution.
The projects promoted by the Packaging Cluster and carried out in collaboration with members of the same entity, or with other clusters and national and European companies, are described below:

Consortium: IP Triana / Eurecat / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 126,580
Call: Agrupación Empresarial Innovadora. May, 2017. Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad.
Description: The product to be developed in this project is a dispenser of gelatin capsules that are traditionally used in the pharmaceutical and food supplement sector. At present in the market there is no container that allows to dose the gelatin capsules in a similar way or equal to that of compressed tablets of sweeteners and the like. The vast majority of these products are packaged in plastic blisters with an aluminum film that performs the sealing.

Consortium: Hamer Packaging / Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG) / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 40,045
Call: Proyectos de fomento de la economía circular. TES/859/2017. Agencia de Residus de Catalunya.
Description: The project introduces the launch of Hamer Packaging's cellulose-based hard capsules coffee business line. It includes the validation of the prototype, thus offering an alternative to the manufacturers of coffee and other beverages following the Cradle to Cradle® model. It also identifies key markets and validates the business model with the aim of helping to diversify Hamer's business, increasing its revenues and margin while improving competitiveness for the company's future.
17 April 2020
Consortium: Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG) / Hochland / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 40,240
Call: Proyectos de fomento de la economía circular. TES/859/2017. Agencia de Residus de Catalunya.
Description: Upcycling demonstrates the technical, legal and economic feasibility for the reuse / recirculation of pre and post-consumer recycled material in multi-layer containers intended for food uses. Hochland is a cheese manufacturer that needs to package them properly to ensure that the product meets its organoleptic and food safety characteristics throughout its shelf life. Currently the best way to preserve these products is through a multilayer film of different plastics. Hochland proposed to EIG the challenge of finding a solution to be able to sup-recycle (upcycling) the printed multilayer film.
17 April 2020
Consortium: Cluster Health Tech (CAT) / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 24,035
Call: Iniciatives de reforç de la competitivitat. EMC/2268/2016. Agència per a la Competitivitat de l'Empresa, ACCIÓ.
Description: This project stimulates a process of collaboration between companies in the sectors of packaging and medical technologies, which helps to undertake joint initiatives that allow them to strengthen their competitive position. Companies approach a process of strategic reflection that allows them to have a better knowledge of their company and identify new opportunities for diversification of their business. For companies in the medical technology sector, it represents an opportunity to satisfy their needs in the field of packaging and for packaging companies an opportunity to diversify their business.
17 April 2020
Consortium: Cluster AINS (CAT) / Cluster FoodNetwork (DK) / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 24,500
Call: Iniciatives de reforç de la competitivitat. EMC/2268/2016. Agència per a la Competitivitat de l'Empresa, ACCIÓ.
Description: Establishment of transnational and transversal collaborations between two food clusters and a packaging cluster and its members to facilitate the internationalization and development of transversal competences.
17 April 2020
Consortium: Cluster Innovacc / La Vola / Enplater / Noel / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 45,710
Call: Proyectos de fomento de la economía circular. TES/1275/2016. Agencia de Residus de Catalunya.
Description: In the meat sector in particular, rigid plastic containers such as nacelles and flexible plastic type lids with multi-material structures are used, with different types of polymers, which hinder their recyclability. The multi-material composition of the containers limits their recovery and, therefore, their final destination in most cases ends up being the landfill. The project develops, analyzes and tests the possibilities of ecodesign of containers with monomaterial structures that allow the material recovery of plastics.
17 April 2020
Consortium: AEI Textils / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 21,510
Call: Proyectos de fomento de la economía circular. TES/1275/2016. Agencia de Residus de Catalunya.
Description: The project establishes a collaboration between the Packaging Cluster (Catalan packaging cluster) and the AEI Textils (Catalan cluster of technical textiles), with the aim of establishing synergies between the companies of both clusters and promoting among them the effective use of material resources, through the reduction at source of industrial waste, the reuse of products, the improvement of recyclability and the recovery of waste. The project takes as reference the framework of industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis models to reach, at the level of clusters, a transition towards the circular and low carbon economy.

Consortium: Pick d Pack / Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG) / Packaging Cluster
Budget: € 12,000
Call: Iniciatives de reforç de la competitivitat. EMO/798/2014. Agència per a la Competitivitat de l'Empresa, ACCIÓ.
Description: The product design for circularity is a central theme of the Ellen Macarthur Foundation to allow a circular economy. Ensuring the use of reusable and pure materials is key, so we currently have the limiting element of chemical additives and ink used in materials, finished product and packaging. The ecodesign project of the EMF begins with paper/cardboard, one of the best recycled products in the world, to get a proof of concept to establish ecodesign standards with approaches that can be replicated in other industries. The Packaging Cluster adapts the project to the Catalan business fabric, working directly with a distribution company, PickdPack, and a consultant who carries out a diagnostic study and a concrete circular economy proposal, EIG.

Call: Innovative Agrupación Empresarial Innovadora. August, 2014. Ministerio de Industria, Energía y Turismo.
Description: Development of a new valve that replaces and improves the silicone valve patent of the American LMS that is present in many dispensers, especially in the food industry (honey, ketchup, mayonnaise and other sauces) and wellness and beauty (gel bath or shampoo). The new valve improves recycling on one side, since the insertion of a silicone valve makes the process difficult, and on the other it drastically reduces the cost, since it can be manufactured entirely in a cap injection machine.
